1 yr old kennel dog

by Rick
(Iowa)

Our friend told us of a couple of Pom's that are both about 1 yr old that are available for free. They are currently at a breeder and they were unable to find a home for them and they say they will put them down if they can't find someone to take them.

They have spent their entire life in the kennel cage and if we get them they would be house pets. They are obviously not housebroken but I was wondering if they may also have "issues" related to living in the kennel environment for so long.

Do you think these dogs have the potential to become acceptable house pets?

Thanks,
Rick

special

I think these dogs would be very special and it would seem that after living so long in a cage they would so enjoy the freedom they will be eager to please. If you have another dog and it is housebroken that makes for a good teacher. We got a pom/sheltie puppy and already had a 5 year old blue heeler and the heeler showed the pom how to potty outside very quickly. I just think these two little dogs will love you dearly for taking them in and getting them out of the cage. There will be accidents but the main thing is to take them out often and really praise them when they potty in the grass.

Rescue/Kennel

To have the opportunity to give a rescue/kennel dog a quality of life is a percious gift to give to a A dog that has not known compassion and the love of a human. There will be some challenges but in the end the positives out weigh the negatives. Good luck.

Kennel / Puppy Mill dogs
by: Kathleen

We adopted a dog (french bulldog) who was a puppy mill rescue, had been bred for years, and lived confined in a cage her whole life. Her nails were severely overgrown, her teeth are severely worn from years of chewing to try and get out of a cage, she was overweight from eating tons of poor quality food, and her belly/teats were nearly to the floor from having litter after litter of pups. We adopted her when she was almost 7 years old.

We had similar concerns to yours, but she has adapted extremely well to living in our home with 2 children and two other dogs, took well to housetraining (not without some accidents, but the other dogs who kinda showed her the way). We've had her for over a year now and she is the sweetest, best dog ever!!!
