Adopted Un-trained Male Pomeranian

How can I get my 9 month old, male, purebred Pomeranian (not neutered) to learn how to do his business outside and on the wee-wee pads rather than all over the rest of my house? We take him outside for his walks but for some reason, he just WILL NOT go outside but would much rather wait until he gets back home. Keep in mind that I just adopted him Nov. 2, 2010 and he's never had proper training due to abusive ex-owners. I also do not have a dog crate for him to be trained in.

potty training your pom puppy
by: bvazquez

I bought a 3month old pom. It took me 2 rough months before I began to see some improvement. I did not use a crate. I confined him to a small space but big enough to put his wee wee pad on one side and his food and bed on the other side. Feed him and about 15 minutes later take him out. Stay out long enough for him to do his business and then REWARD him. If he does it in the house, just pick-him up and take him straignt to his wee wee pad. Use command words "pee pee", "potty" or whatever else you choose. I used very small treats and praised him just like I did my kids when they first started to walk and talk. When you reward him or praise him make sure you repeat the word "potty or pee pee" or whatever cue word you choose to use. Do not yell, cream or intimidate him because he will then hide to releave himself. Keep him in his area. Let him out only to potty and play. Once he becomes consistent with his wee wee pad then you can put the pad outside his area. Puppies have a smaller bladder so they have to go frequently. Take him to his pad every hour and say the cue words. Take him everytime he drinks, eats or plays. Be patient and go on the internet and read about different methods for potty training. I hope this helps, Good Luck!

It's been four months now and my puppy is fully trained. I walk him 3 times a day, and he barks near the door if he wants to go out. I also keep a pad next to the door just in case of emergencies.
