After a short haircut, my pom's hair is coarse and dry.

My 2 yr. old male pom had a short summer haircut 6 weeks ago, his hair is growing back dry and coarse. Will it become soft and flowing like before? Any shampoo or oonditioning products that you recommend?

Many thanks.

Pom's hair is coarse & dry

My Pom has beautiful, soft, silky hair when it's long or when I cut it short. We shampoo him at least once a weak using Sargent's flea & tick shampoo but we then use Mane & Tail conditioner (which we massage in with a pet massaging mitt) and a spray called "Purrfume". The conditioner keeps his hair very soft and prevents it from matting and the spray keeps him smelling good all week. We also add a couple of teaspoons of olive oil or cod liver oil to his dry food to keep his coat shiny and he loves it!

Don't cut a pom's coat too short because it may permanetly ruin their coat. Feel free to trim though!

Julia -
I have a pom w/ a double coat, the coarse undercoat and the silky topcoat. I used to cut her hair short in the summer because I thought it would make her cooler. Then I read that it can actually make them more hot. The double coat is kind of like a temperature regulation system, keeping them cool in warm weather and warm in cool weather. I also read that the topcoat sometimes does not grow back.
I would suggest typing your question into google and seeing what you can find. Also, give it time. I stopped giving my dog a short haircut and now she has a beautiful, silky coat.
If it were me, I would also feed her a really great diet. My dog eats raw food, canned food and tripe and I often add salmon oil. All of these make her coat like silk! :)
Best of Luck to you!
