Anal Glands

by Lisa Courville

To all you Pom lovers like myself, I was wondering if anyone was having Anal Glad problems with their dog. My Pom Coco is 9 years old and never had a problem until now. It smells really bad and I was wondering if this was common in this breed.

Look forward to any reply

dyi to squeeze the anal
by: mister boswell

Hi, my male pom who is now 13 has had issues with compacted glands for several years now. I actually learnt how to do it off the internet believe it or not. You where a glove and with a tissue place your index finger at 5 oclock and your thumb at 7 oclock at the base of the rectum. Gently squeeze upwards and it will release the anal glands into the tissue. I know it sounds gross but my pom's glands compact regularly. I then visited my vets and he said I'd done it correctly. Hope this helps

The anal glands need to be expressed at each grooming. If you groom your own dog, have a vet or groomer teach you how to do this. It's stinky as heck, but will cure the problem.
