Back spasm or seizure?

I have 14-year old Pom who I just rescued. He came from the shelter, so it's difficult to know his history. He has trouble going "up" - whether it's up the stairs or onto the sofa. He has no trouble going down. He is very active for an old dog, always following me around, jumping around in circles, etc. But, at least once a day, he has a spasm of some sort... he can't stand up on his back legs. When this happens, he's usually propped up on his front legs. I can't get him to lay down, he stays propped up. He gets a pained look on his face. I do remain calm, rub his ears and within 5 minutes the spasm is over and he's running around again. I plan to take him to the vet this weekend because I am worried. I don't think it's a seizure as he doesn't writhe around or flop to the ground but I don't know. Does anyone else have this problem with their Pom?

Spasm or seizure
by: Tess

I had a boxer that would freeze and then just his face shook for about a minute. The vet said it was a seizure but only affected that one area of his body. It never seem to bother him afterwards and he lived to be nearly 14 which is extremely long for a boxer.

Pup pain,,
by: Sheila

Hi dear, first let me tell you get some doggie steps. My lil Pom just slid off my bed and broke her little leg in two places, they may be able to jump up on two or three foot high places, but it is NOT advised to ever let them do it. My vet put it to me like this "would you let your daughter jump off a four story building?" enough said.
The legs could very well be displaced at the knees,or hips. My Pom has this issue ,there is a name for it and surgery could be done but I think on an older dog, chances are it is better to check with the vet about a fish shaped over the counter pet med called GlycoFlexII. it has the same stuff for both cats and dogs, that humans take for their bones. You can look it up on the com. My Pom with the knee issues is getting around now better having taken it. The hip issue is called Hip Dysplasia

Both are very painful so dont let pup jump up or down, get the stairs. As for the issues, again, please check with your vet, but that med I told you about should help a lot. God bless, hugs for both, Sheila n Buffy
