My pom had some matted spots so we decided to trim him. The groomer did a lion cut. It has been almost 5 months now and nothing has grown back!! What does this mean? We really want it to grow back.
My pom's hair has not been growing back after had a lion cut one year ago...

Lion cut by: Anonymous
I did it twice on my little blonde female and she was soooo adorable. Got tons of attention everywhere we took her. Her hair grew back thicker. But I didn't shave her undercoat. My male Pomeranian was stolen. They shaved him and his undercoat. Ruined an absolutely gorgeous orange coat. The orange color did not come back as vibrant either.

Lioncuts--don't do themNEW by: Anonymous
Never give your dog a lion cut. It is not natural and soooo many people have trouble with it growing back. If groomer did it without asking I would sue them. The other day I saw a collie with a lion cut. It looked awful..and the poor dog seemed embassed. Also think of how they can get sunburned with short hair like that. The collie was absolutely shaved down to skin. Tell everyone you know not to do it and tell them reasons why not.

OMG I thought I was aloneNEW by: Jessyca Blood
My pom (blonde female) has been getting a lion cut every summer for four years. (My groomer said since she is strictly an inside dog and wears a dress outside, it was okay to do)
Since last summer she has two bald spots on her back that won't grow back. I had success for four years and she would grow back perfectly. So I guess it varies and depends on the dog. But in the end, it is not growing back properly. I guess we will wait and see.
It was nice to know, I am not alone, and there is nothing wrong with her probably. (Which I was worried about)

Patchy after the Lion CutNEW by: Anonymous
I took my pom to a different groomer and she did the lion cut as well. Now my Pom has 3 large ugly shaved patches on her back and the rest of her is growing out. I HATE it! I'm still hoping it will grow out in time.

Lion CutNEW by: Anonymous
I took my cute little pom to the groomer for a trim and she came out with a lion cut. Can you imagine my horror when they brought her out to me. I was so horrified I could barely speak. Will her hair grow back? If so, how long will it take?

My Poms hair did not grow back after lion cutNEW by: Tom Riccobono
Every Year before summer my Pom would get a Lion cut. Sometimes twice a year. This was never a problem and his hair always grew back nice. About 2 years ago or more he had another Lion cut. When I picked him up I noticed it was shaven very very close. I think it was a little sore for him. Maybe a bit of razor burn. I was upset with the groomer and never went back. His hair has never grown back. His legs do fully grow back and some patchy parts of his body have grown back but it is all matted and very bad on his body. The groomer here in NYC said it will never ever grow back. I never went back to the place in the Poconos that did the damage. Around his neck and upper body it's almost like a crew cut and you can see his skin. He is still a beauty. When I try to grow it out he looks really shabby and almost sickly. I have to keep a coat on him. When he gets a trim (a reset of the lion cut) He looks fine but still I would really love to see him like the old days. I would like to sue the guy big time but that is not my nature. This has been going on for over 2 years. Does not seem like this will change. I'm fine with it now but it's a dam shame. Hope this helps some of you out. I just read some of your comments and it was healing knowing we are not alone with this problem. If you get a lion cut make sure it's not crew cut short. If I had any idea of this problem I would have never. Tom Riccobono

Same ExperienceNEW by: Anonymous
My sister's pom got cut this summer and the top of her body hair is not growing back either. I wonder if they cut too close and singed/burnt the skin somehow.
I think massaging the area frequently may help.

Shed/grow cycleNEW by: Anonymous
What time of year did you get your dog's hair cut? I'm a groomer... Usually I try to talk people out of getting their dog's hair cut short after June if it's a double coated breed like a pom.. especially if they want it to have hair for winter. If you hit the shed/growth cycle wrong it takes a while to grow it back. I find that if I clip a dog after June they'll start getting some undercoat back but it might take up to a year for the outer coat to come back.. Also sometimes the undercoat comes back in patches at first..depending on the dog and again, the time of year.. Have patience. If your dog is healthy it should eventually grow back.
