I am a pro groomer and yes you can trim your dog. Just not to the skin.
Many dogs are clipped for many reasons. I have never seen a dog whose hair did not grow back. You do not damage the hair follicle in the skin when you clip, so that's not going to change the hair. It can look lighter in color though.
You may find that the undercoat grows back first, and your dog will be very fuzzy and the color will mot come back until the guard hairs return. It can take several months to get the color back. Most of my clients keep them blocked once they start. I block my own pom in a 5/8s. My husband likes it shorter, but i like the chubby look. In full coat, she looks wider than she is tall, her coat is just too much.
I find that just blocking them with a 5/8s or 3/4 blade gives a nice shape and keeps the dog neat. Especially on the hind end where the skirts can get out of control.
Don't cut the hair to the skin unless there is a real reason to do so. Tar, sap, paint, etc. While they can overheat in the sun with a haircut, most dogs these days live in the house and are not out that much. Just watch your sun time.

Grooming a Pom by: Tess
I have heard of short clips for poms and it would look great and feel even better. You wouldn't have to shave him but a close cut would be good.

Haircut by: Mary
No, No, No..a hundred times no...Many people have said that the hair does not always come back well. I have also read that the hair on a Pom or Pom mix acts as an insulator..the thick under hair actually keeps them warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Take water along on the walks to offer the dog and get one of those little coats that you can put a cooler gel pack in if you have to but leave the beautiful hair alone. My pom mix has med length hair and the only place I trim is in back on the haunches...that part grows longer and shaggy so I trim that part only. Good luck with your best friend....Mary
