Heart murmur

My beloved 5 year old Pom was just diagnosed with a heart murmur. From a brand new vet. I took him over one year ago to my old vet and they didn't catch it. So, he's been under the weather all this time and I had no clue why. I emailed the breeder and an old friend that breeds Pom's and no one is answering me back. I'm fearing the worst. He goes in tomorrow morning for an evaluation of the problem. Is there any hope? S

thank you all for the posts. my littl pom, Nick just got diagnosed with a heart murmur. he goes to the cardiologist next month. the vet said is wasn't an emergency.2/3. he has no symptoms. i tell you thank you because all of the websites i have been to have been so negative. i am a nurse, so i understand murmurs. although, dogs are not human, so i just needed some encouragement. when it comes to family and pets i thing all knowledge goes out the window and emotions take over. he is 8 years old and as spunky as ever. they are wonderful little dogs. thanks again to all of you pom and animal lovers.

Get a cardiologist to check out your pom. Mine was born Jan 2010. I got her April 2010 and was told the next day that she had one a murmur rated 5 our of 6 and it was one of two types of murmurs. One that has no surgical intervention (she would die within months) or the other PDA that has a surgical solution. I spoke with two cardiologists in two states. I decided to take a wait and see approach and monitored her every day for symptoms I was told to monitor. She started coughing/hacking on Thanksgiving so I took her to the cardiologist today (Nov. 2010).
Cardiologists hears a faint murmur. When I pressed her for the "number" she said if she had to give it one, it would be a "1" and that the murmur was not even present with each beat. Maybe the first vet (two in the same office) misdiagnosed her, but there is something there and I think time and PRAYERS! helped to heal her.
I've been told no need to even have the ECHO. WE'll just monitor yearly. The Lord is good to Poms!

My Pomeranian is eight and also has a heart murmur she was born with. The vet just checks for changes every time we go. No problems so far.

hope, strength and acceptance NEW
by: Mary

just trust in your new vet and say a prayer to St. Anthony..patron St. of animals. Ask him to intercede to God for your dog. Also be glad for the time you have had with the dog. They are not meant to live forever and it is up to us to cherish the time we have with them and make their passing as comfortable as possible. Again I pray your dog will turn out OK ...if not I pray for you to have the strength to accept this and to be comforted at this difficult time....Mary
