Holding back leg up

My pom puppy (almost 8 months old) suddenly has been holding his left back leg up in the air when he walks. He is not crying or acting as though he is in any pain. It just started this morning out of the blue. I think his nails look a little red? It is hard to tell as he has white colored nails and this may have always been the case.

Knee problems in Poms
by: Anonymous

I have a 12 year old female pom that has had the dislocated knee caps since I got her at 8 weeks old. She has walked on 3 legs since and she is happy, appears healthy and can out run the other two dogs I have. Vet said the chances of repair (when she was young) was 50/50 and I didn't have the heart to put her through it. Doesn't seem to bother her one bit.

It is my understanding this is a common problem in Poms.

Good luck with yours.

Rear leg pain
by: Keekee's mommy

my 6 yr old has had rear left leg problems for a few years. Started after she slid in the hallway. Favors it quite often but can run on all 4's when she wants! Does fine running on just the 3. She jumped off my bed 2 days ago and started screaming, it was horrible, same leg! I am giving her infant tylenol and carrying her alot, tho she can walk enough to go pee..then she looks up at me to pick her up again. Breaking my heart...appetite is great as always. Maybe she just re-injured it? How long do I wait to see if it is more serious?

holding back leg

My mother in laws Pom does the same thing. For over 2 years she has been running on her front legs only and does not like to put pressure on her back legs, but it isn't painful, just uncomfortable. I finally convinced her to take her to the vet (its not normal) and they found that she has fluid buildup in her knees and some signs of arthritis. Smalls dogs CANNOT jump down from high places, it can cause anything from broken bones, to life long disk decease etc (depending on the breed). You should really take your dog into the vet before things become more serious. And i recommend getting Doggie insurance....Poms have a lot of health issues (legs, hips, teeth, disk decease in their necks etc)

Holding Leg Up
by: Julieann

I am so sorry that your baby hurt herself. My little guy has improved since my posting. He must have twisted his leg or something like that as it does seem much better now. I hope your little girl feels better asap!

Holding leg up
by: Tess

My pom broke her knee just jumping up and down. She held her leg up also but was in obvious pain and has been in a cast for 6 weeks. They have such delicate bones that now I'm afraid everytime she jumps!
