House Training a Pomeranian

I am in the process of adopting a 2 year old Pomeranian - she is not house trained. I have always had puppies to train - not an adult dog. Any advice would be appreciated. I would really like to train her to use pads also.

Pomeranian Potty Training
by: Anonymous

Hi - Congrats on your newest family member. We've always had success with crate training - i.e., crate at night and when unsupervised/away, then take her outside immediately after letting her out. Also, take her out right after eating or drinking. Also associate a word with the action (potty, outside, tee tee, etc.) and LOTS of praise when she does well.

We found that our dogs tore up the pads so we quit using them. There's also some thought that it may confuse the dog as to whether you want them to go inside on the pad or outside. My mom trained her Poms on pads, then quit using them because she wanted them to go outside all the time. Now, they occasionally go on her throw rugs - maybe they think they're like the pads?

Best of luck!
