How long is one of the shedding cycle?

I bought my pom 1 week ago, when it was having its shedding cycle. but now its still quite bald, and little hair seems to be growing. The pet shop person said that this is common in all poms where they will shed most of their hair away. How long is it supposed to last?

pomeranian "uglies"-

My pom went through the "uglies" stage at about 7 mo. old. I think it lasted about 3 mo. He never went bald though- just kind of looked like a long haired chihuahua for awhile! How old is your pom? I have read that alopecia is not uncommon for a pom- with this the coat does not grow back, and kind of feels cottony, like pure undercoat, with bald spots, and super thinning patches. I do not know enough about it, it would obviously be something a vet would need to diagnose-
Another thing I am sure of that could possibly leave your pom bald is shaving! I am a groomer and have seen several poms come in for short shaves- (and "lion" cuts) only to have their beautiful coats never return! A lot of poms do have their coats return- but there is a good chance it will be ruined. Hopefully your pom is just going through its coat change, but if it seems like an awfully long time of no hair- definitely consult a vet and have it checked out!
