I can't get my 7 month pom housetrained!

I have tried the crate method of training and it is not working. My pom goes in her crate...even if left there for a short time. I walk her and let her run in the fenced in yard and then she will come back inside and go. She gives no indication that she has to go, she simply squats. Please can someone give me some words of wisdom.

housebreaking success
by: Anonymous

I too had quite a time housebreaking my pom. I am no novice to this, having had dogs (mixed breeds and wire fox terriers) for over 30 years, She is now just over seven months and doing very well. Quite a schock since all my dogs were housebroken in no more than a week. First, I think housebreaking a pom is a process; it's not discrete as it was with my other dogs. She learned to go outside on command (poop and pee) relatively quickly. However, it took much longer to teach here NOT to go in the house. First she made the connection with poop, and we are almost 100% on pee. I found two things really effective: first, limit water intake. If you give water, you should be prepared to walk the dog within 15 minutes or so. Second, restrict the dog to an area. Too much freedom for such a little dog doesn't work. They have trouble recognizing a whole house as their den. Also, resting and running around is very different: if she's resting, she can hold it almost indefinitely. If she's running around, it seems to stimulate her to need to go, and I think this is just the way Poms are. Oh, I believe if the dog pees in the crate, and you've ruled out separation anxiety, you really need to tire the dog out before putting it in. A dog that pees in the crate needs more exercise. Anyway, hope this helps.

I can't get my 7 month pom housetrained
by: Katwoman

I had an issue with my pom similar to yours. I have a big yard and I would put her out and she would come back inside to do her business. I called the breeder I got her from and asked (because she was 5 months old and supposedly trained when I got her) what was going on. Turned out they had trained her to go on concrete not grass and she was outside (they lived in TN) all day. So, I did the piddle pad method. I had it in the house, near the door to go out. She caught on pretty quick to going there and then I moved it to the side porch just outside the door then down onto the grass and then took it away. She still isn't great at notification but once outside she does go.
