I don't want to shave her, but this is getting ridiculous...

(joke pic taken when she was only 3 mos. or so)

Hey All,
I am a first time Pom owner. I have a black and white pom that is just reaching a year old next week. I brush her for almost an hour every day, and she has been to the groomer for maintenance trims twice.

The problem: Even though I'm doing everything I can to manage her coat; a). I still have to vacuum every day, b). I have to wash her butt all the time (you can guess why) and c). The poor thing is coughing up hairballs once in a while (on my bed).

I really want to see how awesome her adult coat is going to be, and I've heard all of the talk about Pom's coats not always growing back full after a shave, but I'm thinking about getting her the Teddybear cut. My questions are the following:

1). Is this excessive shedding (in November) just a sign of her "blowing" her adolescent coat, meaning i'll let up in a few months?

and

2). Is there a specific length that I should request the groomer cut her hair (definitely don't want to shave her too close) to guarantee that her coat will grow back correctly?

Thanks,
Eve (and Petal)

Pom Hair Cuts
by: Erin

We had our red pom's hair trimmed (I say trimmed, but he got a lion's cut) last summer - honestly, he was so much more comfortable. We had to do it for him because he had a stomach bug (or something) and I ended up having to trim the hair around his butt.

His hair came back just as big as before. He looked a little rag-a-muffin-y though. you might have to begin a regular trimming thing after that - Andy needed it.

Whatever you do don't cut it. Too many don't grow back. I trim the hair on the butt of mine to prevent uncleanliness but it looks cute the way I do it. Otherwise you can get a fermerator on ebay and comb with that. The dog don't like it alot though. Be gentle. I use a rubber brush I got at Walmart that is made to clean hair off clothes and brush the dog with it. They tend to shedd alot if they need a bath. And brush good after the bath and they are good for awhile. But they ALWAYS shedd and you need to vacuum all the time. If you want a dog that don't shedd you got the wrong kind. If you love it ...get used to it. But don't shave cut it. It could end up looking dorky forever.
