Jake; schip-a-pom

Jake, the schip-a-pom

Jake, the schip-a-pom

Jake is a 2 year old schip-a-pom hybrid dog. He was adopted from a local shelter that listed him purely as pomeranian. After speaking with several vets, groomers, and schipperke breeders, his hybrid status as a schip-a-pom was established. Jake's family origins are unknown as the previous owner did not leave any information.

Jake is very active and energetic. He can be stubborn and will often try to "trick" people into giving him what he wants, be it food or attention. Jake, like most schipperke mix dogs, is very bright and easily trained as long as the training is consistent and rewarding. He loves to perform in agility trials, especially those involving jumps. Finally, Jake is similar to other dogs of his breeds in his hatred of rodents or anything rodent-like.

Potty training issues
by: Debbie

I too believe I have a schip-a-pom. She has a pom tail and looks like a little fox with the upright pink ears. She has those cullottes (spelling not sure) on back of her legs. She was a stray too. She is extremely jealous of my rottweiller and schnauzer but gets along great with them.A real little diva.I named her Roxy or foxy roxy. I think she's close to a year old. She will take treats and hide them until she knows she's not getting anymore then she will eat it. Very territorial of her food. Absolutely the most adoreable dog I've ever had, love her! Only problem i have is potty training her, have never had problems before with my other dogs. I tried the pee pads to no avail. Any other product suggestions out there. Getting ready to get a new house so i will have brand new carpet so that worries me.I dont have the money for obedience training right now due to the new house expenses. She's about 10 lbs and climbing, gonna have to watch her food intake more carefully cause she loves to eat.

Schip-a-pom biting
by: Anonymous

Until age 2 they will try everything! These are very head-strong dogs! The nipping/biting will stop by 24 months. A quick remedy that worked with our Schip-a-pom was forming a mouth with my fingers and gently poking our dog when she tried to nip. This mimmicks what her mother would have done with her own mouth to keep her puppies in tow. Usually dogs that do this were separated too soon from their mother or their siblings.
To make a "mouth", place the tips of all 4 fingers on the tip of your thumb. It should look like a dog's snout! Don't poke hard, just enough to get the attention of your dog. Do it several times rapidly like mommy would have. It works!

Loupy, the Schip-a-pom
by: Schip-a-pom lover

We finally know what our Loupy is!! She was dumped, near death, in our neighborhood @ 5 months of age! Some say she's a pom but we've always known she has lots of Schipperke genes. Within 2 days of feeding her, she jumped in our pool and swam laps!! I thought I would have to go in after her but the pool has steps that start at the bottom of the pool and rise to the edge for a span of 50 feet (very dog friendly). When she was done she scampered out and has continued to swim laps winter or summer for the last 5 years. Stubborn is putting it mildly when it comes to Loup! She has her own way in everything and, altho, not brave she alerts us to every single thing that is not "normal." The range can be anything from leaving a closet door open to people she cannot see in the street. We ADORE her and recommend this mix to anyone who wants a spunky, smart, faithful small dog. She's also very athletic but not interested in sharing her family with other dogs! We've had small dogs for over 40 years but never one as intelligent, territorial and demanding as a Schip-a-pom!! We love her for her abundance of personality and uniqueness.

US TOO!
by: Anonymous

Hello. Thats funny when i saw this pic i thought that looks just like my dog! We think she is a "skip-a-pom" too. The owners claimed she was a full bred pomeranian but after comparing her to others poms over the years we just knew that couldn't be true so we decided she was mixed we just didn't know with what. Then a maintenance guy came over and asked if she was a schipperke (something i never heard of before) but then when i looked it up i saw the resemblence!

another one
by: Moamarr

We have been trying to figure out what Moamarr was, Momi for short actually named Marley. Papers say pure bred pom but way too big at 16 lbs. We are his 2nd owner and his behavior is exactly like everyone's listed from running, to tricking us to be petted or given a treat. We love him, my husband not so much but I sure do.

Toby's great
by: Tom

Jake looks just like our TOBY. What a joy he is. We rescued him from a shelter and wonder why anyone would have given him up. Reading the comments now gives me a clue that perhaps Toby was a runaway. Toby is very people oriented...follows me everywhere I go, stays close by and loves to 'snuggle' and be rubbed and petted. He is extremely bright and learned a number of 'tricks' in very little time. He is also very obedient with very little training. The only time he barks is when he is defending his domain from outsiders and when he gets excited that we've come home. He did not like being crated at all so he has the run of the house when we are gone. He has never chewed a thing. The shedding is not that bad as long as you keep him combed and brushed. Wouldn't trade Toby for anything.

Nubi
by: Cassie R.

My Schip-a-pom, Nubi, is a pure delight. He looks a lot like Jake and attracts attention wherever he goes.
Schip-a-poms are very unique dogs who should not be trusted off leash. They are extremely bright and need lots of attention, patience and affection. They can be stubborn and have a "bit" of a barking problem, nonetheless, I would not trade my Nubi for the world.

Shelter Pups
by: Anonymous

I got my lil girl Belle from a shelter as well!
I have a theory that they run away. When I first got her she always tried to get out at any moment. She was also EXTREMELY nippy! She was also about 6 months old like a few others. Or I think people give up on them because of that behaviour. But a few months later she stopped the biting, waits patiently at the door when she needs to pee and can walk off leash and will stay at your heel. They're amazing lil guys if you give them the time. I dealt with the biting with a lil finger hint to the nose and NO, this later turned into her hitting my hand when she wanted my attention but she stopped the biting and now she's an amazing soccer goally =)

In Memory of My Max
by: Linda

Yes, I would say you have a schip-a-pom, looks just like My Sweet Max, who recently passed away. He also, was Continental Kennel Club registered as a Pomeranian. I was his fifth owner before he was two years old. Seems the others did not understand, how much Love and Affection they were going to miss. He loved to Play and had a heart like a Lion. You have a wonderful pet in your home, please take special care of him, and know he will Love you with all of his heart and soul. Have been doing research to see if I could find a rescue, schip-a-pom. If anyone knows of one in Tennessee, Arkansas, Missisippi or Missouri please email me at ljbm1034(at)bellsouth.net. Thank you with all of My Heart for your Love and Devotion.

Jake
by: Anna

Looks like our MAx rescue dog that has no papers. He was a truckers dog from Kentucky. There were 39 Skipd picked up in a piuppy mill in Kentucky in 6/09. See www.schipperkerescue.net for pictures. Several have the curly tails and look like POM mix. Max is a little more hyper than my pure bred Sjips

Schip-A-Pom Weight
by: Corie

Jake weights about 18-19 pounds, depending on how much we groom/brush him. :) Since schipperkes are from the spitz background, they can get this big. I've also been told that some pomeranians get large as well. Our vet says that Jake is at a great weight and is in good shape!

Schip-a-Pom weight range?
by: Jane

Our Ruffles looks so much like Jake. He showed up on our lawn a few months ago with a collar and no tags, bearing fleas, whipworms, flatworms, hookworms, AND heartworms. He's now worm free and our beloved pet. We were told by the vet that Ruff was a Pomeranian, but he weighs 18 lbs. and looks like a Schip-a-pom. Is this a standard weight for an adult s-a-p?

Teddy
by: Anonymous

I have a Schip a pom named Teddy. He is 10 pounds and 6 mos old. He is the best companion I could have hoped for. Yes he does like to nibble and at first it was hard. You need to let him/her know that it hurts by using a code word. He and I attend classes at Petsmart and he is a star student. If you are consistent your puppy will learn what you want.

Schip-a-pom biting
by: Corie

Hello! I am the "mom" of the glorious Jake featured on this page. Jake had a problem with play biting when we first adopted him. However, this has been nearly eliminated through consistent training and daily exercise. When Jake play bites, we say "OUCH!" very loudly and he stops right away. It seems that he didn't know that it hurt. This behavior has basically disappeared and I credit this mainly to the fact that schipperkes are very smart.

I highly suggest that you take your schip-a-pom to some kind of training or obedience classes. They love to be challenged and need a way to get their excess energy out.

The other thing is to adopt a zero tolerance policy for biting, even play biting. If your pup does it, say NO and then turn away from him and do not give any attention until he stops. Then praise him for his good behavior and his listening skills.

Not particularly known for biting
by: Anonymous

They don't seem to be any more prone to biting than other breeds. Looks like from the comments that some have had problems with biting, but others haven't. That said, all dogs are different, just like people. ;-)

Biting
by: New Mexico

Oso has a tendency to start nipping and biting when he wants my attention. I tell him no and hold his mouth shut. When I let go if starts again, I do it again (not hard or long). He usually will stop, then I throw a toy and he gets into playing and chewing with his toy instead. He really likes squeaky toys, he finds the squeaker part and runs thru the house squeaking. You might want to try having something to distract him from biting you. Hope this helps.

cutie
by: michelle

My dog doesnt bite, and she hasnt gotten too much bigger I would say she probably weighs 10 lbs soaking wet because of all her fur. shes a sweet little dog. Well till it comes to our German shepherd she thinks that she is as big as the shepherd and picks on her and attacks her. It is quite funny to watch. Otherwise a really good dog.

Another Schip-a-Pom Rescue
by: New Mexico

My little guy, Oso was dumped and followed a neighborhood child home from the bus. After having him scanned for a chip, running ads, and watching lost and found-It became apparent he was dumped! No one came forward, so he's become the new baby in our home after six weeks. The shelter said he was about 5 months old and he looks just like Jake. When I had him at the shelter one worker called him a pom and another called him a skipper,so after much searching on the Internet, I agree he is a hybrid of the two. Reading the other posts about housebreaking, Oso had the same issue when he arrived. I keep him in a small carrier at night and we have a 10 yr old Sheltie that is in and out all day. After about weeks, he got the hint. He doesn't ley us know when he wants out but say OUTSIDE, and he is at the door waiting. He has not had an accident at night since we got the carrier, in the morning he sits at the door and waits to be let out. At this point he can stay in the house for several hours alone and messes! My husband and I were getting ready to start looking for a dog when Oso found us and we could not have picked a better dog! He is the love of our life along with our Sheltie. So glad he saw fit to adopt us.

another rescued schip-a-pom
by: tom

It is interesting that so many schip-a-poms have been rescued from shelters.

We, too, rescued Toby from a shelter 2 weeks ago and they told us he was a pomeranian but it was obvious he was mixed with something else because of his size. He looks just like Jake and he is a delight. He is docile, quiet, loyal, friendly, rarely barks and is, for the most part, housebroken. He lets my son cuddle and hold him for a time and then just follows us around and lays at our feet the rest of the time. He also "hates" the squirrels in our backyard.

Glad to know Toby is in good company with others of his same breeding.

Does anyone have any idea when breeding this hybrid started and why (it seems to me) so many are being found in shelters when they are such adorable dogs?

My Ship-a-pom
by: Melissa

Jake is so cute! I have a girl schip-a-pom named Indy that I love so very much. She has the sweetest little personality--that is until our big Lab comes around and then she tries to "protect" me. She is so very protective of me and our home. Indy also loves to catch mice at our cabin. She will stay up all night looking for them if I let her.
I don't know what I would without my little puppy girl. She's my best friend!

cute lil guy
by: Michelle in AR

I love your lil guy he is so cute. I have a female that looks exactly like him cept she has a little white on her chest and 3 of her paws. I too thought she was a pure pom till my friend was looking at her and said she had to have schiperke in her. So we decided she was a hybrid. she was dropped off at my bf uncles house and about to be put down but we took her in and now shes a handful. she bullies my german shepherd around which is funny. glad to know there are others out there with cute doggies.

Jake

to the person who wrote: We have recently adopted what appears to be a schip-a-pom. Our Max looks very much like Jake. He was lost and we adopted him from the pound. They were unsure what he was. He was listed as a pom but everyone asks us if he is a Schiperkee.

He is very bright but stubborn and seems like he could get lost easily as he chases things all the time and never looks back. We keep a close eye on him in our fenced in yard and he is never off leash.

We've had him three months and he still is not completely house broken. He never barks to tell us he wants to go outside. He stands at the door and does his business because he is silent and is waiting for someone to notice him. Have any suggestions? He only barks at intruders but not to communicate with us.

We love him dearly.

I, too have obtained a dog who looks a lot like a schip-a-pom. I got her from a rescue agency who had her listed as a Pom. She a wonderful dog but does not tell us when she wants to go out either. We have to just automatically take her out every two hours and also right after she eats. She's a great dog. She loves to be touched but when she is done she's done. She sits quietly on the couch and watches tv. She quite amusing. What a personality. Good luck with your house training.

I would recommend taking Max to a basic obedience class and they can help you with the potty training stuff. Jake loved going to "school" and it is really helpful for both owner and dog! :) Good luck!
