My pom gets diarrhea every time I try to feed her dog food... help!

by Zazoo

My pom is 10 years old as has never had any food issues. She has been fed high-quality dry dog food her entire life. No by-product stuff, ever! About a month ago she got very ill, vomiting every time she drank water and terrible diarrhea. I took her to the vet where the bloodwork showed no problems. They gave her fluids and a course of heavy antibiotics and some ulcer meds just in case. They told me to feed her boiled chicken breast and white rice for a week and then slowly mix back in dog food. She recovered fully, and a week later I started putting her dog food back in with the rice and chicken. She got diarrhea again immediately. So, I put her back on chicken and rice for another week and bought another kind of high-quality dog food to try. A week later, the same result. This has happened three times now, and after only two feedings with just a bit of the dog food mixed in she has diarrhea all over again.

She has never had food allergies, and she has had no problem digesting all different kinds of protein. Chicken, and lamb varieties tried this time.

Any thoughts on what can be wrong with her? She is ten and has always eaten dog food without a problem. Even the kinds I am giving her now, she had previously digested just fine.

Can I just feed her chicken and rice for the rest of her life? This sounds like a bad idea. HELP!

My dog has this problem

Has your vet checked for colitis? Colitis is inflammation of the colon. My 7 yr old pom has had it for two years and now has to be to given special food from the vet and meds every once in a while. If she eats anything else she goes back to having diarrhea and vomiting.

Science diet canned chicken and rice dinner. She sounds Gluten allergic. That means she can't eat regular dogfood which contains glutens like grains corn meals etc. Like a gluten allergy baby who acts autistic but is not. Off the gluten. I have a friend with a Pom like that. Try Scince Diet or Iams canned food rice and Chicken only. You can try store bought but its usually too rich. Make sure the store bought also has no SOY. Bad stuff for dogs.

She is getting older...try a wet food like Cesars. Maybe she is too old to digest dry food anymore. Ask you vet if this could be possible.
