Our Pom is a little thief

We just adopted a year old Pom from an animal shelter about a month ago, and for the past two weeks we have noticed that he: a) eats everything in sight, whether it be rocks and dirt on our walks or fuzz in the house. We have puppy-proofed the house, but sometimes things are accidentally dropped, like tacks and rubber bands (yes, he has gotten those things too, he hasn't eaten them though) and he is always right there to pick him up. Tango also thinks it is all a game. When we ask him to sit still so we can get the object from him, he runs away at lightning speed expecting us to come after him.

He has only been with us a little while, but already there is nothing he hasn't taken. All of the rooms have to be closed off to him when we are home, so he has also just recently resorted to chewing the wood on the trim of the house.

Sometimes when he doesn't even have anything in his mouth he will just get very worked up and run around the sofa barking like crazy. He has become more vicious with his expressions and will also just bark at us for no reason. We have tried spray bottles and ignoring him and the whole "treat that makes them stop and smell" trick, but none of them have worked on him. I really do not want this to turn into something dangerous and it is already really annoying. My family is considering selling him or giving him back to the adoption agency, but I don't want to give up on him just yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Pom eating everything

My Vader did the same thing when he was a puppy, they are getting used to their surroundings. They will grow out of it believe me.

About the little thief
by: Candelaria

Hi, when I found Mr Fox (I mean found out in the street - it was raining hard that November day)
he was soaking wet, my granddaughter called me and we called towards us and he came...no tag, no collar, nothing. We dried him, fed him, and posted notices in nearby corner stores and several pet stores - no one ever called for him, I kept an eye in the newspapers - no one posted a lost dog. I did not know a thing about this dog except that he was so beautiful and loveable. In January 2001 took him to the Vet, he checked out fine, he got his shots, later in the month took him to pet salon and had him groomed. He has been with me ever since.
He did have that habit about going around the house sniffing the floor, looking for food (I thought). But I did realize that since he had been out in the streets - he had to look for food wherever...and he still does that...he didn't pick objects that would hurt him, one thing that he will do is that if he senses that you don't like him he'll urinate in your shoe, your door if it is closed, whatever he finds that belongs to you. He has never done that to any one my things
One thing he does is kind of launches at you and ggrowls - Mr Fox wants to play, when he does that II kind of launch at him and he returns it, then tturns and takes off running - I run after him (chase)and we go round and round and then he stops and lets me catch him. All he wanted was to play. He is a picky eater....I won't go into his medical problems...but I wouldn't change him for anything in the world and I believe that I could never care for another dog the way I do about him.

Maybe he just needs lots of extra attention and love. Perhaps he feels abondanded or unloved coming from a shelter.
