Pom with spells and head movements
by: Anonymous

I have had 2 poms with this problem and took me years to get a diagnosis. Head jerking and moving from side to side, and can't seem to see or hear, glassy eyes and wants to be held. I hold her in my arms and walk with her. These episodes last from 2 to 24 hours. It is not true seizures but a condition similiar to hepatic encephalopathy and yes, the liver is the problem. She needs a high carb and low protein diet, no people food, and feed her rice or pasta. Take her to the vet to get a prescription similar to enulose syryp to ensure she poops daily. The toxin buildup in the system starts these. We went from 4 a week to 2 a year. Sometimes the vet can flush their system out with saline and it makes the spell less intense.

pom seizures...
by: missy

Hi, I hope your little furball is doing alright...mine has had several incidents like you describe, along with some really frightening (until we knew what they were) incidents at night where she would make horrible high-pitched squeal, stiffen up, and lose bladder control. I took her to a specialist at one point who spent some real time with her and asked a LOT of questions about her and these "incidents".
It turns out that she has epilepsy and these are seizures.
Her brother has it too, but to a lesser degree (they share same mother, different fathers).
It seems like the seizures have become much less frequent since I began following these tips: little tiny healthy snacks outside of mealtime to avoid extreme lows of blood sugar levels, keep hydrated(i used to take their water away at night) avoid too much "upset" (I use a bit more caution when visiting or unfamiliar animals/kids are around to lessen undue stress). Now when the seizures occur I don't freak out, I just keep them safe and quiet while they get their senses back.
The doc did say, however, that if they began to come more often, we would consider medication...but that if we could control with diet and environment it is much better (no side effects/no medicine expense).
Hope that helps!

Liver Shunt Disease
by: Sheila

You should have taken to the vet long ago,he may have Liver Shunt Disease or Diabetes, or any numerous brain injuries or nerve damage hon, but the first one fits the description and is VERY SERIOUS! Please take your baby to the vet IMMEDIATELY, tell him everything. IF the pup has eaten any Stride, Orbit or any of those types gum, make him vomit and get him to the vet ASAP, it has Xylitol in it and its deadly within a few minutes . Please get him to the vet. I went though this with Buffy, she is having liver tests now. We will pray for your pup and you. Have a blessed day, go to VET NOW!
