pom coughing?

I have a 14 yr.old pom that I had since he was 6 weeks old. I notice that the last 2 or so years he seems to hack like he is coughing. Although nothing comes up most of the time, sometimes he seems like he spits out phlegm as though it is his sinus. Has anyone else noticed this with their pom? I ask the vet about it and he said to give him benedryl.

My Pom is only 8yrs old and she coughs very seldom but when she does it last about 2-3 days then it goes away. It has only happened twice this year.

Sorry, I see you asked your vet. You don't always get the right answer. Sometimes we have to seek 2nd & 3rd opinions for medical info. It is not normal for your dog at 14 yrs to be coughing for 2 plus years. think about it, and it's not normal to have any thing coming up.

If your vet doesn't listen & examine him & do tests to find the cause, go to another vet. You need to know & give him treatment. He is old & deserves the best in life. I would not let my pom cough for that long not knowing what the cause is & no treatment. You need another vet asap. If your dog has some fluid coming up, collect it take to vet with you preferably a new vet. Also if you have a video camera record his coughing spells & show your vet ASAP.

1st you must get to the vet.

2nd it can be 1 of several things, possibly:

* congestive heart failure ongoing - need vet meds
* heart worms on going - needs vet meds
* lung disease on & off going - needs vet meds
* collapsing trachea on & off going - must keep quite & unstressed can kill your dog. Mine almost
died a few x have to have vet script meds on hand at all times.
* kennel cough is an on ging constsnt type cough that last up to 4 weeks needs antibiotics & cough meds ect from vet only, This is like a respiratory infection you should vaccinate against.

If your dog has only been doing it for 2 yrs & is an older dog , most likely it will be congestive heart failure or heart worms. Either way your dog is suffering & is quite old. If you can't afford to take her to the vet & can't get medical care you should put her to sleep.

I had an older one with congestive heart failure & he coughed for 2 wks & i let him go to end his
suffering after his diagnosis. It's very hard but you can't let your loyal friend suffer & cough constantly. Think of your self coughing for 2 years. Please take your baby to the vet. That is part of having a dog in your life. They need medical care. You're lucky you've had her this long. Take him or her to the vet as soon as possible. Is he or she still eating & drinking?

Does your dog still have all its teeth top & bottom?

For everyone's information, when you get a new puppy get health insurance on them right away. It covers so much & get it before your dog has an accident or develops an illness. VIP covers genetic issues like the luxating patellas knees & also the collapsing trachea. Both are common in poms. Mine is 10 years with both cushings disease (very expensive) & arthritis, so as a lesson get insurance about $20 a month. Krogers has accidental issurance starting at 7.99 for a dog !!! Check it out. I wish you the best of luck with your dog & please take her to the vet right away!

You should have his heart checked. My dog is coughing and went to a specialist cardiologist. Diagnosed. Congestive heart failure. Gave him cough mess that seemed to help. Please take him to the vet ASAP.

Collapsing trachea
by: PomLuvr NC

Hi, I have a 14yr old pom as well and last Feb'10 she was diagnosed with a collapsing trachea. This common in toy breeds i.e pomeranians. It would be worth it for you have your vet (I went to NCSU vet school) to have it check it out. My girls is on two meds for this, Buthorphanol (helps with the cough) and Theophylline (bronchial dilator). Surgery is an option for a younger dog as not all surgeries take. I keep Koko as calm as possible, she still plays with her toys, but I will try to avoid any unnecessary barking episodes so as not to initial those spells. I hope all goes well with your dog.
