Pomeranian Broken Kneecap

My pomeranian, Alice, is nearly 5 months old. She is 3 3/4 lbs and full of energy, mischief and joy.
She broke her left, front kneecap and is now in a large cast. She was just jumping up and down when the break happened, I never even saw it.
Has anyone out there experienced a similar thing with their pom? I feel just awful for Alice and terrified of any breaks in the future.
