Pomeranian Broken Leg

by Esther
(Miami, fl)

We fell in love with our toy pom on Friday,12/26 & bought him home from the pet store (he's only 6 months old)

On Sunday, 12/28, he fell asleep on the sofa, slipped off and broke his front right leg! I know it may sound ridiculous to some but in 2 days he's already a part of the family & we're devastated!! The vet said the ideal situation would be surgery as he needs a plate. Unfortunately, we don't have the $5k+ the surgery will cost. Second option was to bandage his little leg & keep his movements restricted for next two weeks & return to vet for another x-ray- the hope is that since he's still growing the break would heal on it's own.

I'm concerned that we're doing the right thing - any information you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated. I want to do what's best for our baby.

Thank you in advance,
Esther

my pom broke his leg when he was 2 1/2 mths
by: Sheila

I have a 3 year old pommie and he broke his back leg when he was 2 1/2 mths old. He had surgery and it was a long healing process. He jumps and played like any other puppy after that, but these past 2 days he has been whining like something is bothering him. Is it possible that the leg he broke could be hurting him?

Pom broken leg
by: Tess

I was reading "Helen's" comment about her poms broken right elbow and it sounds just like my poms broken left elbow. She was only 4 and a half months at the time and I was also devastated. I took her to an orthopedic surgeon and they casted her for almost 8 weeks. She still limps 3 months after the break but is doing better. I go back for her rehab and we're working hard to get her leg fixed.
My question to Helen is, how is your pom doing today?

Pom - Broken Legs
by: Anonymous

I had the same thing happen to my Pom!! He broke his legs 3 seperate times! The frst time was a small fracture that healed well with a cast (even though the stupid VCA wanted to plate his leg) and the 2nd two braks were more severe (different leg). The first time it broke, I was skeptical because of what the VCA wanted to do with his first break. Another Vet told me it needed to be plated ($3,000) but I didn't do that because of $$ and also wasntsure if it couldn't just heal itself. Well, I should have plated it because the leg broke again in the same place and it was terrible! The first break on that leg didn't heal that well (even though I kept the cast on for 2 weeks longer then the doc said). So I finally had to plate his little limb and that worked out GREAT! All of these breaks happened within the 1st ten months of his life! He unfortuantely died a couple of weeks after the final cast came off from a heart condition. He was only 14 months. He actually died at the Vet's house so I was lucky that he was there to really take good care of the situation. My poor little Pommie! I think it was all genetic with poor bones.
Good Luck and definitely watch for your dog if he tends to go lame every now and then. Get him plated but get 2nd and 3rd opinions first!

Good Luck!

Broken R Front Leg
by: Helen

You need to find a vet that is serious about providing care for your Pom and not fattening their wallet. Look outside of the Miami area. The leg needs to be set in an orthopedic cast. My Pom had a fractured R Elbow @ 4 months old I was devastated and at the time found some help to cover the cost. Also Dr. Patricia Reiss, Savannah Animal Hospital in Jensen Beach is wonderful. Good Luck!
