My teacup pomeranian is doing a lot of coughing - what should i do?

My dog has been coughing on and off for the past 2 weeks. She stopped when I started giving her garlic rice (2 fresh chopped cloves in a cup of steamed white rice). I stopped to see if it helped and it did. My mom suggested that she might have heartworm, I looked up the symptoms and the only one that she has is the coughing. I don't know what's wrong with her!
