I have a 8 year old male pom who recently started having trouble jumping on and off the bed. Could this be the first signs of old age?

luxating patella

Have your vet check the kneecaps. These little dogs develop luxating patellae or "floating kneecaps". Might need surgery. In any event, jumping is not encouraged for this breed.

Pom wont jump

I have heard from other people on this site that you should not encourage your Pom to jump, as this can cause back injury. My Yoramian is only 4 and he used to.. what we called jump for joy to go outside...However after hearing about the back injury, I have stopped this game..I would also put something beside your bed to help him up!!

Yes...it could be early signs of arthritis. I made a couple things by the bottom of the bed...a box-like sewing box with a foam padded lid and a small ttable just a bit higher than the sewing box with a bathroom rug over the top so there are steps that the dog doesn't have to go so high at once. It works well. Try that and next trip to the vet have the dog checked for spinal or hip arthritis....Mary

He may be getting some stiff joints these days. I bet his doctor could recommend something.
