The Pomeranian Dog Breed Standard
Following are abbreviated Pomeranian dog breed standards based upon AKC guidelines.
Appearance, Carriage and Condition:
The Pomeranian Breed Standard states that Pomeranians are compact, active toy dogs. They are alert, inquisitive, and commanding in gait.
Size:
Average weight is 3 to 7 pounds; an ideal show pom is 4 to 6 pounds. The pomeranian is medium-boned, with a sturdy, well-balanced frame.
Skull:
The head is in proportion with the body, with a short, straight muzzle. Pomeranian faces are described as "fox-like" with an alert expression. The eyes are bright, medium-sized, almond-shaped, and set back into the skull. The nose and eye rims are black except in brown, beaver, and blue dogs, which are self-colored.
Coat:
The Pomeranian is noted for its double coat which consists of a soft, dense undercoat and a straight, glistening outer coat which is harsher in texture.
Colors:
All
colors, patterns and variations are allowed and judged on equal basis.
Patterns:
- Black and Tan (the richer the tan the more desirable)
- Brindle - base color of gold, red, or orange - brindled with strong black cross stripes
- Parti-color - white base coat with any other color distributed in patches; a white blaze on the head is preferred.

The Open Classes at specialty shows may be divided by color as follows:
- Open Red
- Orange
- Cream
- Sable
- Open Black

- Open Any Other Color, Pattern, or Variation.
