My Papillon had her teeth cleaned and it was done by a tech in the vet's office and not by the vet even though I had asked the vet to do it. He lied! About 4 months later my Baby Girl had really bad smelly breath. I thought it was her stomach. I thought maybe she had eaten something and it had caused her stomach to sour. Finally she began sticking her tongue out rapidly over and over again. A friend told me that his dog had a bad tooth and the vet had to pull it so maybe that was the problem because his dog also had the bad breath. That night I took my Baby Girl into an emergency room vet and after he examined her he came back out to the waiting room and told me he had never gone back on another vet but he would go back on this vet. He said that the other vet had cleaned my papillon's teeth too good. The person that had cleaned them had gone too far down into the gum and caused 8 teeth to abcess. He removed those 8 teeth and she was fine. He also told me that she would want to eat more food than she ever had before and she did. I tried talking to the other vet about what he had let happen to my dog and he refused to talk to me about it. Now I will not let anyone clean my dog's teeth unless I demand that the vet does the cleaning and I make the vet aware of what happened and it had not ever happen again. Please beware of teeth cleaning and the after affects it can have if it is not done in the proper manner.

My girl also had BAD breath by: Anonymous
Poor thing - I feel for you, nothing worse than wanting some pom puppy love & cringing instead.
My little girl is 5 & 1/2 years old and her breath was getting progressively worse & worse over the last year. The vet gave me some additive for her water, didn't make much difference but she doesn't want to clean them just yet.
Anyway, I noticed the other day that her breath was much better now. Then I realised she's lost 2 of her little bottom teeth, so maybe she had loose tooth/decay which was causing the putrid smell....
Of course now I'm worried about the 2 missing teeth....
Good luck with figuring out the smelly breath cause!
