I'm looking at adopting a Pomeranian from a shelter but he holds his tail down all the time. It doesn't seem tender when touched or raised. Could it be anal glands or something more serious?
I adopted a Kennel Poo-Out 11yr old Pom. by: KAREN
When puppy mills get rid of their stock of dogs they call it Pooing-Out. Usually they kill the older animals or pass them on the anonymous outlets where no one will tell where they came from. I adopted from a pet store friend a little 11 yr old Pommie named Cricket. The Vet said his little heart rated a 4 out of 10 and explained the life these little guys have in this kennel life. Little Pommies get close to whoever they are with and these guys get almost no contact in these awful kennels. He had a half inch of poo and crud on his feet making it look like he had on boots. Took 4 hours to clean him up. He had a hole in his thick fur to pee in. He had bad surgery knee splints so he fell back to sit and could not bend his back legs. It took less than a month for him to be my shadow with my other 5 pommies and he had a little hoarse bark. They cut the larinix in kennels.
I got to keep him 4 months. He was 'the vet said' too energetic after finding an owner who loved him and let him run free after he had spent his first 11 years in a kennel. His little heart could not handle it. The last day of his life he followed me closer than usual and finally came to me when I sat down and I held him and he gave me four breaths as I held him and his little heart gave out and I was holding him when he died. His little heart later we found had burst. Would I do it again knowing what I know today? In a HEARTBEAT.

Tail Down by: Lisa
Tail down just means scared and insecure. Who wouldn't be under the circumstances. Pom's are very people oriented and get attached quickly to whoever spends the most time with them. If you decide to take him/her home give the Pom about a month to feel really secure and safe. The tail will proably be up within 1 or 2 days. I adopted a 1 yr. old Pom from a busted puppy mill from our local shelter and she was clingy and a bit scared the 1st week, but now(its only been 2 months) she owns the place. Happy, healthy and outruns the cats and my other dog(great Pyr). She was never house broken and it only took 1 1/2 weeks of taking her outdoors every 2-3 or so hours during the day and she was trained. They are one of the smartest dogs I've ever had. Hope this helps

He is probably very scared, they will do that with their tails.
