pom chomping at air
by: Anonymous

My pom chomps the air, like he is chewing it, or trying to catch a fly. My mom was a vet tech for 30 years and her former employers told her it was a petit mal seizure - sounds serious, but its not.

Another possible explanation: if your dog has floaters in his eyes or cataracts, he might be licking at what he perceives is floating in the air. So you might want to have his eyes checked.

Otherwise, this is probably a harmless tic.

Good luck.

GUMS OR TEETH HURT
by: Patti

I've had Poms for 25 yrs. When mine did this it was due to a bad tooth (or teeth). After having teeth cleaned and extractions of bad teeth, they would be fine.

licking

My pom has done this as far as I can remember. She is now 8 years old. She did this, I noticed when she would smell lotions or perfumes in the air and would lick and lick until the cows came home! Also pomeranians have loose cartilage in their throats and cough frequently and lick to try and "reset" this cartilage in their throats. I would recheck with your vet for sure...it could be a tracheal collapse or something serious like that. And for the love of Dog dont feed her bread...dogs and flour dont mix.

Licking at the air
by: Michele

My pom has been licking at the air like she is trying to catch a fly or something. My vet did research and found that it is a very mild form of seizures. My pom has been doing this since she was about two years old and is seven now and still does it, especially if she has eaten anything sweet. There is no cure I guess. Hope this helps.

licking air
by: Mary

she or he probably has hair caught in the mouth or throat and is licking trying to get it to go down. try giving a little food like bread and it may dislodge and help it on down...Mary
