Pomeranian nervousness and yelping

My Pom is 10 years old. When anybody comes near him, or picks him up, he yelps. What Causes him to do this? It just started recently. He seems to be "nervous" or afraid.

Did you feel of his ribs to be sure there is nothing there that may be hurting ...like a lump or growth? My friends dog had a growth that came through between the ribs. It had been growing inside but then came through between the ribs. Feel for that. Otherwise maybe the dog is just afraid of falling when someone picks it up...it is getting older and like humans they are more afraid as they get older too...
