Pomeranian Outdoors

We have a 8 month old male Pomeranian named Sam. Sam weighs eight pounds; a large Pomeranian. He is a replacement for our last dog who was shot and killed by a hunter when he wandered too far from our house. Needless to say we are very apprehensive about letting Sam outdoors to use the potty for too long, judging that he too, could wander too far. Sam has already been fixed.

We also have a 12 Year old Husky that gets along great with Sam; the Husky is very much an outdoor-dog. Our family lives on a remote island in the Puget Sound, WA. There are many Coyotes, Bald Eagles, Red Tail Hawks and Night Owls that roam the environment at all times of the day. My question is; Is Sam in danger? When we let Sam out our Husky always accompanies him and they tend to stick close together. Should we be worried about Sam being outside in the environment we live in, or is he relatively safe?
Please respond.

FENCE
by: Debbie

I am in agreement with the first responde. Get a fence. I had a beloved dog get run over many years ago; he was hit in the middle of the night and the driver never bothered to stop. I would go for a fence, whatever you can afford. Also, keep a close watch on him out in the yard. I know you want him to be safe.

Hi Susan -

It sounds like your property is not fenced and that the dogs roam freely(?). It's great that your Husky accompanies Sam, but I don't blame you for being concerned.

You might consider fencing a small area for Sam if you can't be with him while he is outside. And, even in a fenced area, I wouldn't leave him out for long unattended. We have a wildlife sanctuary nearby and always kept an eye on our pups when they were out because of large birds, etc.. I'd hate for something to happen to him!

All the best,
Kathleen
