My 5 & 1/2 year old pom started scratching and scratching a few weeks ago out of the blue, doesn't have fleas and has never had any issues before. After a few days she had red rash on her tummy and near legs etc
The vet said she's most likely got an allergy & scratching is causing her to also get infected. Gave her an injection & some HUMAN hayfever tablets, worked a treat. Its spring in Australia so it was probably pollens etc. The brand I was giving her is Zilarex, available over the counter here. They contain 10mg Cetirizine hydrochloride and I was giving her 1 tablet with food two times a day.
She scratches every now & again so I give her one now about once a week.
If you cant find any other genuine reason it could be as simple as this.

Pomeranian Scratching... by: Anonymous
This is a funny one. My pom does this too, but he does NOT have fleas. I gave him a flea bath and I bathe him once a week. Not sure, but it can be due to skin dryness/ irritation. I read that poms do have sensitive skin. I also have observed that all dogs scratch their ears and stuff. If your dog is not constantly scratching then they do not have fleas. If it it not constant, I suggest aloe lotion for dogs and if you ever hear your dog reverse sneezing do not be alarmed, just massage the throat and they will be fine.
Let's also all remember that poms do get hairballs... they really need to make hairball control for long haired dogs... this can cause the "reverse sneeze" .., sounds choking like...

turn him over by: Anonymous
Turn him over and check for fleas. Part the hair and if you see stuff that looks like black pepper you are looking at flea poop. If you find that get to the vet.
