my pom has an itchy butt around his tail and is always trying to itch himself on everybody. Is this due to dry skin, and if so what should I be using? Please help me.
I have a pug and a pomeranian (we just got the pom today!!). My pug, Mr. Dimples, always has an itchy butt (and sometimes it smells like nasty fish that's been left out for too long- we call it fish butt :P ). We took him to the vet and he told us that Mr. Dimples needs his anal glands expressed (where they squeeze the hole and get the junk out). I've heard that most dogs don't need a vet because this happens naturally when they poop, but some dogs just can't (like my pug). Don't try to express the glands yourself; my vet said that only trained and licensed veterinarians/dog groomers should perform this (in other words, not even vet techs can do this if they're not properly certified). It only takes a minute and makes your doggie feel so much better. I hope this helps!! Ciao

Have you taken a stool sample to the vet to check for worms? That would be the first guess. Second would be from the food. Could be an allergic reaction to the food. Try a different kind. My dogs will do that if they get too much grease or oil from eating people food. Good luck...Mary
