Pomeranian's fur thinning

I have a four year old male pure bred black Pomeranian named Charlie. When he was around a year and a half, he got his full Pom coat. It was VERY thick! But now at age four it seems to be thinning a little. I was looking at photos from awhile ago and his fur seemed thicker then. Now it seems to be thinning. Why, and what could be the cause of this?
