Pomeranian's Hair Won't Grow Back

My 12 yr old Pomerain's hair won't grow back!

I had my male pomeranian shaved this year (2010) as we do every year. However, this year, the black colored fur places on his back are not growing back. We saw a couple of poms a few years ago with the owner of the dogs saying this happened to her dogs as well, but they were really bad. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that his hair grows back because he is a beautiful dog.

Hair Grown Back
by: Anonymous

My Pomeranian was sick two years ago and was losing patches of hair. His hair didn't grow back for two years. Then he was sick again (lethargic, not acting himself) three months ago and was diagnosed with pancreatitis. The vet suggested I put him on a strict diet of Hill's Prescription Diet I/D Canine Canned Food. I have been feeding him only the I/D food and his pancreatitis symptoms have gotten better. He has also grown back his hair where there were bald patches. The purpose of the food change was for pancreatitis and not the regrowth of hair but this has been an added bonus.

Suggestions for hair growth
by: Anonymous

A product I've used in the past made by a company called Lambert-Kaye is Linatone. It comes with or without added zinc. The combination of oils has always been good for producing and maintaining a quality coat and healthy skin. It may trigger a flush in growth for those bald spots. You might also get his/her hormone levels checked to make sure you're not dealing with some thyroid issues.

Spits breed

His hair my grow back in a year from now. Poms as with all Spits blow their coats and sometimes it will not grow back if shaved. These dogs are not meant to be shaved. They require regular grooming and trimming. If you do not want to groom a dog, do not buy a Pom!!!

Pom hair loss
by: Anonymous

My neighbor has 2 poms and when asking the grooming about shaving her black male she simply shaved a strip down his back and then she had no choice. He looks worse than ever a year plus later. his back hair has never grown back and the rest is patchy at best. He is neutered. Any suggestions they already switched to a natural diet and give fish oil. As a groomer myself I never recommend it, but if it's what the owner wants I feel the need to do as asked. They would only find another groomer to do it anyhow. Hope this stops anayone from doing it!

What I gave my pom when he lost his hair!
by: Anonymous

This actually did not have to do with a hair cut...but My pom Spunky did start scratching A LOT, and losing hair! Then at 5 years of age, he had a seizure...I panicked...and prayed...I spent many hours online reading on causes for this. One of the reasons for the intense scratching and the chewing on the inside of his leg as well as his paws-even the seizures...was the ingredients of dog food! While I bought Spunky expensive dog food, it might as well have been saw dust! Apparently, a lot of dogs are allergic to grain!...I should know this, even I can't tolerate wheat! While a lot of people and pets can tolerate rice...wheat and corn are deadly...So, I tried feeding Spunky an all-meat, grain-free dog food called Canidae...I read I needed to allow time for the other to go out of his system...but it was only a week and a half before Spunky stopped scratching completely. He stopped having seizures and his hair became so nice and thick and long! What a difference it made! And no, Spunky did not have fleas!...He is now 8 years old. Last summer however, my friend had Spunky out in a field where he rolled in dead animal or something...I washed him a couple of times with shampoo, but then he began scratching horribly...He was going crazy. There was a high concentration of fleas last summer in our area so I gave him flea medicine, but apparently it was too much or he was allergic to it. Spunky started losing all of his hair...He looked ratty...so pathetic...Then my friend suggested I put a little olive oil on Spunky's dog food...not a lot...Only a teaspoon. My friend tried this with his cat who had lost hair one summer and the hair on the cat grew back beautifully! So I tried it! Spunky not only LOVED it...His hair is so thick, so soft, so nice!...I recommend the olive oil for all of my friends for their pets...Oh, and by-th-way. It is extra virgin and has been prayed over...So we actually put ANOINTED oil on Spunky's food-ha! Just thought I would share this as my dog not only never has looked better...He seems to have a lot more energy as well. He is still eating the Canidae dog food too...Have a good one!...Vicki

I recently took my dog to the Vet for this problem and they said it is a thyroid condition common to Pomerainians.

Hope this helps

Bald Poms
by: Anonymous

We've had 2 black skin Poms. Not only do you have the alopecia you also have reproductive issues. Often times the males have risen testicles while the females do not heat cycle properly or cannot carry a litter to term. This makes one think the problem is linked to hormones. Take a look at this page which discusses a study my dogs were a part of:

Simple fact is poms shouldn't be shaved you always run the risk of it not coming back the way it was after it is done this strange phenomenon is called clipper alepecia. I am a dog groomer of 7 years and if the pom isn't matted I'm not shaving it despite owners wishes these are usually the same people who get upset when the coat won't grow back. I have 6 little poms a white male, black male, merled tan, Orange and white parti male, one orange female and a black and tan female who I just get trim UPS AND furminator shampoo and conditoner to blow out extra coat keeps them tidy and coats full and beautiful.

Why isn't anyone coming up with any answers for these dogs hair loss? Does the hair finally grow back? My dog has grown back a tiny bit of the hair on her back but no more since.

A poms hair really shouldnt be cut short or shaved, its not much of a problem for a young one but in the geriatric years it takes longer to grow back and often grows back in patches. Give it time, it will grow back, it just might be a while

by: Darla

Two months ago the groomer shaved my Pom when I only asked for a trim I was shocked when I picked her up, now she is growing hair but not on her back, I am giving her vitiamins for hair and skin I hope her hair grows back, I am so worried. She has to wear a little dress now for it is so ugly, I will never go back to this groomer.

My poms hair is finally growing back
by: Fluffy

I have 3 poms and I got them all summer cuts back in June of this year. Only one of my poms hair would not grow back, after a few months some of the areas had not grown back since the day it was initially cut. The groomer at Pet Smart told me I should get my dog some sweaters which I did not appreciate because my pom had beautiful thick hair and they knew before they cut it that low there was a possibility it would not grow back. When I tried to look up information to help me on the internet, there was nothing positive. I wanted to let everyone know some really good news and that is all of a sudden my poms fur is growing back. It is now thick, no spots where hair was not growing and it has that beautiful shine back. I am not sure what I can attribute to this change, but it is unbelieveable. It still has some growing to do to get as long as it was before. I wanted to share some changes I made that could have benefited my dog, for one I started giving 1/2 of catalyst a day (she has been taking them for almost 3 months now). Catalyst is a supplment for dogs that I get from my vet. I also changed all of my dogs food to the Blue brand. Also the weather getting cold could have caused her hair to start growing. No matter what helped, I am just glad I did and I want to share it with all of you pom lovers out there to let you know there is hope.

Hair Growth

Hi, I had this problem with my Pom, female, and it is because she has the X gene and when she went into heat the hormones activated and caused bad hair growth and also course hair spots, the only way I can fix it is to have her spayed, which I should have done before, anyway if your male is not fixed you may consider doing so as this could be the problem, if you look up Black Skin Disease in Pomeranians or Alopecia X you can see the pictures showing the difference in hair growth, thanks

Why didn't you take heed when you saw those other dogs and not have yours shaved again after that? Too late after the fact. I hope its not too late for your dog...Mary
