Pom's in the snow.

I recently took my pomeranians out for a hike in minus degree temps. There was at least a foot of snow. They loved it. I didn't know how long I could keep them out in such freezing weather. We went for a 45 minute hike and they seemed upset when I put them in the car. We usually hike for 1 and 1/2 hours. I really need an answer to how long they can hike in cold weather.

The "weak link" poms have in cold weather is their paws. When their rear paws get too cold they will begin hopping on three legs to keep the paw off the cold ground, when front paws are cold they will sit down and lift a paw off the ground to lick the bottom. Often a small ice chunk will form on the fur between their paw pads, poms will lick and bite this ice chunk to try to remove it. Dry pavement or packed snow presents fewer problems, loose snow or slush and water is much worse. I've found that if the sun is out and it's not windy my pom can stay out for hours even at zero degrees Fahrenheit, but at night her paws start to bother her quickly once the temperature is below about 15 to 17 degrees F.
