Poms with children and other dogs

Hi, I am a current owner of two Akitas which i show, one I owner-handled to his championship, the other is pointed and on her way. I am an experienced dog owner and also a responsible parent. I am not trying to toot my own horn, but just want to make clear that I am looking to make a smart, planned out decision in order to benefit everyone involved, I am not a 'let's buy a puppy for my kids at Xmas' type. I work part-time and am able to spend alot of time with my dogs and 2 daughters, 5 and 7. Thy have grown up with the dogs and know very well how to respectfully treat them and love them. They are actually great with helping me with them, though I ALWAYS monitor them as dogs are still animals. We have seen Poms at shows and the girls are drawn to them instantly. Who can blame them, they are absolutely adorable.

My question is, do you think adding a Pom rescue to our mix is in no way possible, or with the right personality, something we may be able to pursue? Opinions, thoughts welcomed, and thank you !!

Laura

DOG
by: Anonymous

Hello,
I too spent my life training dogs and I too was the handler in competitions. I always had large dogs (german shephards) my whole life. But now I have 2 Poms and they are absolutely wonderful! My X husband had a seiberian husky dog, and my poms and the husky got along great. Poms think that they are big dogs in small bodies. I have two children (now ages 10 and 14...both boys) that are inseperatable with my poms. (They were ages 7 and 3 when I got my poms). They are best friends. Our poms go everywhere with us. They are part of the family. Very loyal and obedient. They learned non verbal body signals faster than some of the larger breeds I have trained. I never thought I would be the type to have a small dog, but now I can't imagine my life without my poms.

Pom mixed breed
by: Debbie

I own a Pom/Sheltie mix breed and she is a wonderful little dog. She is three years old and grew to be 14 pounds. She plays great with my daughter's Austrailian Cattle Dog. I just love her to pieces. I don't see why a Pom from a shelter would be a problem. I'll bet the dog adjusts to your children and other dogs really fast.
