Thinking of adopting a Pom

Hey all. I've only ever been a big dog parent, never any toy breeds. One of my coworkers' mothers has recently passed, and the coworker hates dogs, and is trying to find a home for her mother's furbaby. I've had dogs before, I don't want her to go to the pound, and my fiancee and I have a house, so we have room for a small dog. We do have three spoiled cats already. What should I look out for as far as being a new Pom parent? I have no idea if the little lady is housebroken, or spayed, or up to date on shots, an immediate vet visit will be in order of course, but I thought I'd ask some Pom owners what their experiences have been, and what problems I can expect.
