Time to put him down?

Bogey has been to the doctor this week - he wasn't eating, he lost weight and he was very lethargic. He has been on a drip and perked up some and ate some. I have taken him for the weekend to "think" about it. He has been x-rayed and cat-scanned. He has congestive heart failure controlled by lasix, thyroid problems controlled by medication, and he's deaf.

Now they are telling me has two large gall stones, pancreas problems, possible stomach/intestinal cancer(bloody diarrhea, coughing coffee grounds like substance) and his spinal vertebrae have lost the cushion between several vertebrae to the point that they are rubbing, and spurs are growing onto (?) or around his spinal cord to the point that the vet doesn't understand why he isn't showing signs of paralysis in his back legs.

Of course, he is falling a lot so maybe he is. They do not want to operate - 50/50 chance of not waking up. The doctor says he has to be in pain but he does not react dramatically.

He is in pain but cannot tell how much. He does not yelp or flinch when touched but he will moan a little. And is having a great deal of trouble going up and down steps.

The vet has sent me home to think but I can tell they think it is time.

Any suggestions?

I know how your feeling
by: Tina

Your dog is so cute, My pom Koco was my second
pom she was 12 years 6 months and 3 days she had
to be put to sleep Monday June 22. Her ex-rays
showed she had fluid on the lungs, enlarged heart,
and enlarged liver. She could not walk, eat, drink,
or go outside. I knew she was passing away at home but I could no longer let her suffer another
minute. Koco was cream coloured and only
weighed 5 lbs when she passed. Losing her has been so hard, I feel empty. She was with us all
the time. She went most places with us because
of her being so small. Even know she was purebred, she had several health issues, like
Eplipsy, collapse trachea, and black skin disease.
Medication and my wonderful vet helped to keep
Koco in my life. good luck with your pom.

Maybe not time
by: Bogey's owner

Just a quick report. Bogey has rallied! I don't lnow how much longer he will last but the little fellow perked up over the weekend. Bowel movements stabilized, more entergy, eating OK. I am going to just watch him very carefully and tryl to let him hang on as long as HE seems to want to. Thanks for your kind comments.

sometimes, it is just time
by: Loralyn

We just had to put our Rocky down saturday, He was in our family for nearly 12 years. It was heartbreaking, but he had no quality of life, bloody diareah, no energy, swollen spleen and liver, 104 temp. he hadnt curled his little tail in over 2 weeks.

Vet said that giving him any quality of life would be next to impossible.

Putting him down was hard, but peaceful. The vet let us stay there with him.

Thoughts go to you and your family in this difficult desicion.

Loralyn
