Underweight Pomeranian

I believe my 9 months old Pomeranian is underweight. I feed her 1/4c (59ml) ones a day. The last time I went to the vet which was about a month ago she was about 5 pounds. I'm not sure if I should increase her feeding to twice a day (1/4c) twice a day? I also don't want her to get fat since the winter is coming and she would be less active.

You should talk with the vet. 5 lbs is within range for a pommie per AKC standards (4-7 lbs). You can run your hands along the sides to determine if she is underweight ( it will feel boney ) You may want to split her feedings to 2x a day to help maintain body sugar levels. I have two pommies and I feed them 1/2 cup each per day of I/D prescription hill's diet- i combine soft and kibble. No snacks. If i give them a treat, i cut back the food and adjust accordingly. But you should talk with your vet. I talk to mine about everything that concerns my pommies amd they are beautiful, healthy and happy.better to be underweight than over. One pound gain on these little ones is equal to 20 lbs for humans.

I allow my dogs to have dry food in their dish at all times and they only eat when they are hungry. But I do think you need to give a little more than you are. That is not enough. At least a half cup per day and even more if the dog is real active.
